Thanks. I thought about picking up several half-dimes for my smaller transactions when silver hits $4,000 an ounce during the depression.

At $4,000 an ounce, a silver half-dime would be worth $140! I might actually have to take tin snips and cut a half dime in half just to pay for my small transactions! A half dime cut in half would be worth $70. That's about a months worth of groceries for someone like me!

Actually, now that I think about it, isn't there a three-cent silver piece?

Think about it. It could happen! It's always better to be prepared than to be like some idiot running around scrambling for these things after the fact.

Practically any half dime you have will be worth more for numismatic value than for its silver content.

this one from my vast collection of scans.

Why bother with half dimes or small silver. Keep pre 1982 pennies. About 145 per pound. So if copper follows silver, at a silver price of 4000, copper would be 6-700 bucks a pound, making each penny worth 4-5 bucks each.

Besides, a pre 1982 penny goes for half spot or less. Where else can you buy a pound of copper for 1.45.

Good idea! I never thought about this.

[QUOTE=RossL;1029128]Practically any half dime you have will be worth more for numismatic value than for its silver content.

Not during a depression. During a time of depression, it's dog-eat-dog. People won't care one iota about numismatic value. They'll only care about getting a loaf of bread for their starving kids with a small silver coin.

Then I'll be buying up all their half dimes, just like my grandpa did during the depression.

"...At $4,000 an ounce, a silver half-dime would be worth $140!..."

By the time silver reaches $4K, $140.00 might buy a loaf of bread.
